Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Trade with Libya.

Bernard Allen

Question:

388 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he has satisfied himself that, in keeping with this country's adherence to regulations in relation to trade with Libya, other countries in the EC are doing likewise.

United Nations Resolution No. 748 of March 1992 imposed mandatory sanctions which prohibit the export of arms and the provision of aviation equipment and services to Libya. The EC has given effect to the UN sanctions by Regulation 945/92 which is directly applicable and legally binding on all member states. While it is a matter for the EC institutions to ensure compliance with Community legislation, I have no information to suggest that member states are not complying with the terms of the Regulation.

The Deputy may wish to note that the sanctions do not affect trade in products or services other than those mentioned above.
