Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Nursing Staff Payments.

Paul McGrath

Question:

436 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health the reason for the failure to pay the various increases and retrospective payments due to nursing staff in a hospital (details supplied) in County Dublin on 1 December 1992, and 1 January 1993 despite the fact that approval for payments issued from his Department in November 1992; and if he will give a likely date for payment of these increases.

Peamount Hospital is directly funded by the Eastern Health Board which has provided the hospital with resources to implement the salary increases due under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress (PESP). The arrears due to nurses who are paid on a monthly basis were paid on 19 March, 1993 and all other staff will receive payment not later than 2 April, 1993.

A multiplicity of grades qualified for payment of arrears following these special salary awards. The calculation of the arrears has been complex and, despite the best efforts of the Eastern Health Board and Peamount Hospital, the hospital was not in a position to make payments before these dates.
