Question:

450 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health if he will give the age group of persons admitted to psychiatric hospitals for treatment for abuse of alcohol in each health board area for the latest two years for which figures are available.

Information relating to the number of persons suffering from alcoholism who are referred to psychiatric hospitals for treatment is compiled on an annual basis by the Health Research Board on behalf of my Department. The information is not collated by the board in the manner requested by the Deputy.

Information is collected separately by the board on admissions to psychiatric hospitals for the treatment of alcohol abuse by age group and by health board area. The latest years in respect of which information is available are 1988 and 1989, details of which are listed hereunder:
