Vol. 429 No. 1

Written Answers. - Proceedings against Sellafield.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

100 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will initiate legal proceedings against Sellafield at European or international level within the next year in view of the commitment given in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993 to 1997.

The policy of the Government is that operations at Sellafield should be wound down and closed. Our concerns regarding the radiological risks to the Irish population from its continued operation are, and have been, constantly raised at EC level and in all relevant international fora.

With regard to the question of legal action over Sellafield, the Attorney General has advised that there is no evidence to date to suggest that operation at the complex are in breach of EC law and international conventions which would sustain a successful legal action.

However, the situation is being kept under continuous review and the Government remains committed to initiating appropriate legal action whenever a sufficient case can be shown to exist.
