Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Specialist Counselling Services.

Peter Barry

Question:

122 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he proposes to allocate funds to provide specialist counselling services to the Digital workers who may need this service as a result of having lost their jobs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Immediately following Digital's decision to cease manufacturing in Galway, I announced the establishment of a special Task Force to tackle the impending employment situation there. I have ensured that the concerns of the workforce in Digital will be fully taken into account and, indeed, procedures have been put in place to facilitate their participation in the Task Force.

The Chairman and Secretariat of the Task Force are now working from the Digital plant. The Industrial Development Authority are also maintaining a presence in the plant so as to service employee queries and proposals. This counselling service will be maintained and modified to respond to initiatives in the most effective way possible. Digital themselves will shortly be establishing a dedicated counselling service and, of course, the services of FÁS will be available, as required.

As issues are identified, the question of financial support will be considered, as appropriate.
