Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Commission Meetings.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

200 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will attend or be represented at the Paris Commission meetings in May and June 1993; if he will make a case to these meetings that British Nuclear Fuels should be prohibited from proceeding with the Sellafield II project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Paris Commission, which deals with the prevention of marine pollution from land-based sources, is primarily a matter for the Minister for the Environment. However, officials of my Department attend such meetings when matters relating to the discharge of radioactive substances into the marine environment arise.

The Deputy can be assured that the Government's concerns about discharges of waste from Sellafield, including the proposed new THORP reprocessing plant, will be raised at every available opportunity and, in particular, at all appropriate international fora such as the Paris Commission.
