Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Residential Places for Mentally Handicapped.

John Bruton

Question:

230 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if any of the additional 70 residential places and additional 200 day places which he intends to provide during 1993 for those with a mental handicap will be provided in the North Eastern Health Board area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Additional funding amounting to £552,000 has been allocated to the North-Eastern Health Board region to provide an extra eight residential/respite places and 20 day care places, to strengthen and further develop both the home support and early intervention and child education and development services and to facilitate the transfer of persons with mental handicap from the psychiatric services to more appropriate placements in the mental handicap services.

The manner in which these services are to be provided in the North-Eastern region will be agreed by the Regional Mental Handicap Co-ordinating Committee, which is representative of the health board, voluntary agencies and parents.
