Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Speed Boat Users.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

63 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will designate certain lakes or part of such lakes for speed boat users in the interest of enjoyment and safety of our lake waters and other users; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I share the Deputy's concern that the recreational use of lakes and other waterways should be a safe and pleasurable activity for all concerned. I am glad to be able to advise the Deputy that the Merchant Shipping (Jet Skis and Fast Power Boats) Regulations, 1992 came into force on 1 April last.

The regulations allow local authorities, regional fisheries boards, harbour authorities and the Commissioners of Public Works to make proposals to me for the designation of areas within their jurisdiction as unsuitable for the operation of jet skis and fast power boats. In considering these proposals I will also take account of the outcome of consultations with various local interest groups.
Three such proposals are currently being considered by the Department. I hope to receive a number of additional proposals over the next few weeks. The various authorities have been asked to finalise their consultations and to bring forward their proposals as quickly as possible in order that designations can be put in place in time for the holiday season.
I am confident that the designation procedure will operate to protect and enhance the enjoyment of boating enthusiasts, swimmers, anglers and of all users of the resource.
