Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations.

Peter Barry

Question:

71 Mr. Barry asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the diplomatic relations, if any, we have with the former republics of the Soviet Union; if any country represents our interests in these countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland has diplomatic relations with Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. The Irish Ambassador in Moscow is accredited to each of these States and has responsibility for the protection of Irish interests in them.

Diplomatic relations have not yet been established with the other states of the former Soviet Union. Irish citizens requiring emergency consular assistance in these states can, if necessary, avail of the services of the missions of other EC member states.

Russia has a resident embassy in Dublin. Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine have not yet accredited ambassadors to Ireland.
