Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cork Garda Numbers.

Peter Barry

Question:

112 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of her publicly expressed concern for policing numbers in O'Connell Street, Dublin 1, she will show a similar public interest in the streets of Cork and be in a position to bring up the Garda strength in the city to an acceptable level beyond the inadequate additional number assigned to Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to parliamentary questions Nos. 27, 57 and 58 on 17 February, 1993 regarding my recent visit to the Cork East Divisional Headquarters of the Garda Síochána at Anglesea Street where I received a comprehensive briefing on crime in Cork. I also met representatives of local interest groups. This visit attracted considerable public attention.

The Garda Commissioner has assigned eight additional gardaí to Cork city since my visit there, and there is a commitment to assign a substantial number of trainee gardaí to Cork from the beginning of June.
