Vol. 429 No. 4

Written Answers. - Overcrowding in County Tipperary School.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

143 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to deal with the enormous overcrowding problem in a school (details supplied) in County Tipperary; if she will meet a deputation of the school authorities so that they may outline the extent of the problem; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In July 1992, my Department conveyed to the school authorities approval of a grant and authorisation to invite tenders for additional accommodation in the form of two prefabricated classrooms with associated toilet facilities to meet anticipated short and medium term needs. As an alternative, an equivalent grant was offered should the school authorities choose to provide a more permanent structure.

These classrooms have yet to be provided. Alternative proposals have now been received from the school authorities and are under consideration and a response will be made as soon as possible.
In the circumstances, I feel that receiving a deputation would not be useful at this time.
