Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Communicating Difficulties.

Question:

206 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties in contacting by telephone officials in the beef and sheep quota sections of his Department in Castlebar, County Mayo; if he will give the numbers and grades of officials in each section there; the numbers of direct telephone lines available to these officials; the number of internal extensions available to them; his views as to whether the telephone or staffing levels are adequate; if his attention has been drawn to the inconvenience and annoyance being caused to the farming community; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the difficulties being experienced in making telephone contact with staff in the section of my Department in Castlebar dealing with suckler cow and ewe premium quotas. The section has only recently been set up and is not yet fully staffed or equipped. My Department is giving priority to staffing it fully and equipping it with more telephones. Indeed additional staff is being assigned to the section with immediate effect and additional telephone facilities will be provided shortly.

At present there is an internal extension available to the section and the staffing consists of an assistant principal, a higher executive officer and two executive officers.
