Vol. 429 No. 6
295 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the proposals by the Irish Hospitals Consultants to allow surgeons, in some cases, to refuse to treat AIDS risk patients.
I have already expressed my surprise at the statement attributed to the President of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association concerning circumstances in which surgeons might not treat patients believed to be at risk of AIDS.
I have already asked the Medical Council to examine the statement and to advise me on whether its contents are in conflict with the Council's guide to ethical conduct and behaviour.
I met representatives of the IHCA this morning and asked them for an elaboration of the remarks contained in the statement.
