Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Funding for Rape Crisis Centres.

Bernard Allen

Question:

305 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the way in which he can justify giving such a small increase to the Rape Crisis Centre in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Clonmel and Waterford who received increases ranging from £2,000 to £3,000, whilst the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre received a £52,000 cash allocation.

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre provides counselling services to victims of rape and sexual abuse from the greater Dublin area as well as dealing with referrals from other parts of the country. Approximately 25 per cent of the total number of clients dealt with by the Centre in 1992 were referred from outside the Eastern Health Board.

Special funding of £52,500 was allocated to the Centre in 1993 to assist with the development of education and training programmes run by the Centre to benefit professionals employed by health boards and other agencies who are in contact with victims of rape and sexual abuse and to assist the Centre to reduce its waiting list for services.
