Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching Services.

John Bruton

Question:

311 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the criteria she will be using in determining the priority of need for a remedial teaching appointment for the Ballivor, Coolronan and Boardsmill national schools, County Meath from within the extra 80 remedial teachers to be appointed from September 1993.

Tony Killeen

Question:

326 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education the criteria considered by her Department when deciding the allocation of remedial teaching resources; and if the number of itinerant children enrolled is taken into account.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 311 and 326 together.

The level of remedial need in schools is identified on the basis of data collected from schools by my Department's Inspectorate. In this connection, the remedial needs of all pupils, including traveller children, are taken into account.

The 80 remedial teachers to be appointed from September, 1993 will be allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected.

The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by Deputy Bruton, will be considered in this context.
