Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Paul Bradford

Question:

313 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education if she has received an application for a remedial teacher to serve the schools at Kilcredan and Clonpriest, County Cork; and if, in view of the commitment given by her predecessor on 22 November 1991, that the school would be given every consideration for a remedial teacher when it would be possible to make further appointments, she will ensure that these schools are facilitated with a teacher for the school year commencing September 1993.

I have received an application for a remedial teacher from the schools in question.

The Programme for a Partnership Government made a specific commitment to the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September, 1996.

As a first step towards honouring this commitment, I have decided to appoint an additional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September, 1993.

These posts will be allocated to individual schools and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools.

The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy will be considered in this context.
