Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Eligibility for Higher Education Grant.

Edward Nealon

Question:

346 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim, now studying for his A levels at St. Michael's College, Ennis-killen, County Fermanagh, and with conditional offers from two universities in Northern Ireland, will be eligible for grant aid from her Department, and will not be denied such a grant because of not holding a leaving certificate.

The Higher Education Grants Scheme, including academic attainments requirement, is currently under review as part of the process of preparing the 1993 scheme. I would point out that under the 1992 scheme it is possible to apply for a higher education grant with specified results at Northern Ireland school terminal examinations. Details of the 1993 Higher Education Grants Scheme will be available from the local authorities, including Leitrim Co. Council, in the summer.
