Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Enniscorthy (Wexford) Garda Station.

Ivan Yates

Question:

96 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the frustration in relation to the delays in the construction of a new Garda station in Enniscorthy, County Wexford and the likelihood of the present Garda personnel vacating the existing Garda barracks by 1 June 1993 unless work commences on a new station; if she will ensure, in conjunction with the Office of Public Works, that work commences immediately; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Avril Doyle

Question:

102 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Justice the present situation and progress on the site at Lymington Road, Enniscorthy, County Wexford for a new Garda station; and when work will commence in view of the imminent vacation of the present premises by the entire station party on 1 June 1993.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 96 and 102 together.

I can assure the Deputies that every effort is being made to ensure that work commences on the new District headquarters at Enniscorthy as soon as possible. Problems arose with regard to the purchase of the site by the Office of Public Works when it became clear that its owners did not hold saleable title to it. The registration of the legal title of the site has been completed in the last week and the Office of Public Works are now proceeding with the purchase of same. In the meantime, work is progressing well on detailed plans for the new building with a view to inviting tenders and placing a contract before the end of the year.

It is not a practical proposition to have this matter finalised by 1 June, 1993. I consider that everything possible is being done to ensure that a new District Headquarters will be constructed at Enniscorthy at the earliest possible date. The delay that has arisen over the purchase of a suitable site is outside my control.
