Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Legislative Programme.

Peter Barry

Question:

107 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice the legislation at present being prepared in her Department; and when she will introduce each one of them.

The Government has a comprehensive legislative programme for the 27th Dáil which is set out in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997. That programme contains proposals for reform of the criminal law and for legislation in certain other areas for which I also have responsibility. These measures are at various stages of preparation in my Department.

Any legislative proposals I may bring forward will be announced in the normal way in due course when they have been considered and approved by the Government.

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government Chief Whip publishes the list of proposed Government legislation at the commencement of each session. The legislative programme is discussed by the Whips on a regular basis and, while the Government in the main works to a planned programme, account must be taken of demands as they arise.

Question:

108 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice if she will grant a visa to a person (details supplied) whose wife is a student at University College Cork and is expecting their first child later on this year.

I am not prepared to approve the granting of a visa at this time in the case of the individual in question who, I understand, entered the State on a short visit nearly two years ago and has remained since then.
