Question:120 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the way in which schools are selected for refurbishment and/or new buildings; and if it is proposed to change the system.

While recognising that all teachers and pupils need a reasonable working and learning environment the limit on capital resources available in any one year requires that projects be prioritised having regard to relevant educational, building and financial factors.
As stated in reply to previous questions I consider it desirable that school authorities be made aware in an open and transparent manner of the position of their particular project and its priority standing in relation to selection criteria at any particular time. I have already publicly announced the major projects which will commence in 1993 under the primary and post primary building programmes. I intend also to disclose publicly the selection criteria for projects in the near future.
