Vol. 429 No. 7

Written Answers. - EC Assistance for Local Authorities.

John Bruton

Question:

56 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance the amount of financial assistance from the European Community received by each of the seven local authorities who have taken part in the Ouverture project to provide technical assistance to local authorities in Eastern Europe.

The Ouverture project was initiated by the European Commission in 1991 and will continue until the end of 1993. The project aims to promote and facilitate cooperation between the regions and cities of the EC in developing links with their counterparts in Central and Eastern Europe.

Responsibility for implementation of this project for the countries with which Ireland is associated rests with Strathclyde Regional Council, Scotland. Grant payments under the project were payable direct by Strathclyde Regional Council to the local authorities concerned. Details of the amounts of these payments are not available from the Council at present. Arrangements are being made for the Council to forward these details as soon as they are available. I will then supply them in writing to the Deputy.
