Vol. 429 No. 7

Written Answers. - Women on Semi-State Boards.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

88 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give a list of the semi-State boards under his aegis where the 40 per cent quota of women has been adhered to by the Government since it accepted the recommendations of the first statement of the Commission on the Status of Women in April, 1991; and if he will further list the boards where the quota has fallen below 40 per cent.

The Marine Institute, established by Order in October 1992, has a nine member Board of whom four appointees were women, including the chairman. (One of the women has since resigned, however.)

The 40 per cent quota has not been reached in the other semi-State bodies under the aegis of the Department of the Marine. For the information of the Deputy, these are:

Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

The Central Fisheries Board (and subsidiary regional boards).

Arramara Teoranta (together with Kelco International).

The Salmon Research Agency.

The Foyle Fisheries Commission (a joint North-South agency).

Harbour Authorities throughout the State.

In the context of the question, nomination or election to the bulk of the above agencies is not solely the prerogative of the Minister for the Marine.
