Vol. 429 No. 7

Written Answers. - Academic Staff Duties.

Liz McManus

Question:

115 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education her views on the desirability of requiring academic staff in universities to undertake duties in teaching, administration and research; and if she has satisfied herself that facilities for research, more particularly library facilities, are adequately funded in those colleges located outside the Dublin area.

The duties of academic staff in universities come within the contractual arrangements between such staff and the university authorities.

In relation to research facilities the position is that successive Governments have in the past and will continue in the future to invest in improving the general infrastructure of our universities within available financial resources.

My Department has been in touch with the Higher Education Authority recently with a view to having a review of the higher education needs of the country carried out.
