Vol. 429 No. 8

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicles Anti-Theft Devices.

Ivor Callely

Question:

56 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received any submissions with regard to the need for anti-theft devices fitted to motor vehicles; if he will introduce proposals in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have received representations regarding this issue.

The development of relevant proposals is being considered at UN/ECE level, in consultation with motor vehicle manufacturers. Such proposals, if adopted, could subsequently form the basis for an EC Type Approval Directive relating to new motor vehicles. Ireland alone cannot effectively exercise a major influence on vehicle design but will support all practical proposals which would contribute to greater vehicle security.
