Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - District Court Fines Payments.

John Bruton

Question:

132 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if it is proposed to implement the findings of the report of the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure which recommends a system of attachment of earnings and deduction from State grants in cases where convicted persons are able but unwilling to pay the fines imposed by the District Court; and when the legislation in question is likely to be introduced.

There is a commitment in the Programme for Government to "revise the law relating to fines and provide for their indexation" and, as I have already indicated in reply to parliamentary question No. 117 of 6 April 1993, any legislative proposals I have in this area will be announced in the normal way in due course.
