137 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if it is proposed to introduce legislation to extend the range of offences to which community service can be applied as a penalty.
I have commenced a major review of official policy in relation to the operation of prisons and the treatment of offenders generally. A wide range of options is being considered in this context including the wider development of community-based sanctions as an alternative to prison custody. I will make a further statement in the matter when my review is completed.
