Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hepatitis B Vaccination.

Nora Owen

Question:

150 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the action he intends to take on foot of EC amendments to Directive 90/679/EEC on Hepatitis B vaccination; and if he will state if Hepatitis B vaccination is offered to all employees or other staff considered at risk of infection.

The Deputy is presumably referring to Directive 90/679/EEC on the protection of workers from risks related to exposure to biological agents at work and the proposed amending directive classifying the relevant biological agents which has yet to be adopted by the European Council.

Proposals are at present being prepared by the Health and Safety Authority for regulations to give effect to Directive 90/679/EEC and to the proposed amending directive under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989. The Health and Safety Authority already recommends that, under section 6 of that Act, employers should offer vaccination against Hepatitis B to all workers for whom the assessment required by section 12 of the Act indicates a risk of infection from Hepatitis B.
