Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Testing of Articulated Lorry Drivers.

Question:

166 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment if he will allow the testing of drivers for articulated vehicles at the testing centre in the Whitemill Industry Estate in Wexford; the reason the testing of drivers for all other classes of vehicles is possible there but not for articulated lorries; the cost to the Exchequer of having examiners travel to Waterford to test drivers for articulated vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Testing in articulated vehicles in Wexford would cause undue interference with traffic and would not be conducive to road safety because of the nature of the street system in the town. Testing in such vehicles in both Kilkenny and Waterford offers reasonable alternatives to applicants and involves no additional cost to the Exchequer as testers are assigned to test centres to carry out a broad range of testing rather than tests related to special classes of vehicles only.
