Question:

210 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of jobs created and lost in the food industry for each year since 1980.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 206 to 210, inclusive, together.

Details of the numbers of jobs created and lost in the food industry, excluding the drink tobacco and by-products sectors, for each of the years 1980-1992 inclusive are set out in Table 1. These figures have been obtained from data compiled by the State grant agencies. A breakdown of the figures by sector is not available.

Details of grants paid by the grant agencies towards the cost of capital investment and research and development work in the food industry for each of the same years are contained in Table 2. Because of the way in which this data is compiled it is not possible to relate the capital investment grants to total investment costs or to give a breakdown of the research and development grants by sector.
State support for research and development work is also provided, both directly and indirectly, by various other agencies and institutions such as An Bord Tráchtála, CBF, An Bord Glas, BIM, Teagasc and the universities. However, it is not possible to quantify this support in monetary terms.
Although many new food products have been developed by the Irish food industry since 1980, there is no comprehensive list or directory of these available at present. However, a considerable amount of relevant information on new products is contained in the following two directories from An Bord Tráchtála: (1) Food and Drink Products Export Directory, and (2) Irish Food and Drink Catering Products Directory 1992. In addition, major new food product introductions to the Irish retail market are highlighted in analysis compiled by the National Food Centre and published annually since 1988 inCheckout Yearbook and Buyers Guide.
