Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Drugs Schemes.

Joan Burton

Question:

256 Mr. R. Burton asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that patients who have had laryngectomies require the use of valves and associated material which would typically cost £70 per month, but they cannot qualify for the refund scheme which is confined to prescribed medicines; and if he will modify the rules so that the necessary medical assistance could be subverted for such patients and others in a similar position.

The community drugs schemes which were established under the Health Act, 1970, allow for the provisions of financial assistance towards the cost of prescribed drugs, medicines and medical and surgical appliances.

The provision of medical equipment associated with the surgical procedures referred to by the Deputy should normally be supplied by the hospital concerned.

If equipment is required for use outside a hospital setting, health boards may provide assistance to a person who is unable, without undue hardship, to obtain such equipment.
