Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Incidence of TB.

Liz McManus

Question:

269 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the 18 per cent increase in TB in Ireland recorded between the years 1987-1990, he will make a statement in relation to the rise in TB; and if he will give details of his strategy to combat this increase.

The information in my Department on the number of notified cases of Tuberculosis for the period 1987 to 1990 indicates an increase of just under 4 per cent in cases reported.

My Department's policy in relation to Tuberculosis is being examined by a working party under the chairmanship of the Chief Medical Officer of my Department. The group is examining all aspects of Tuberculosis including notification, surveillance, treatment and contact tracing procedures. Their aim will be to ensure that there is an appropriate framework to deal with all problems associated with Tuberculosis. I expect the group to report before the end of this year.
