Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Code.

Liz McManus

Question:

176 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the anomaly which exists in the case of an unmarried couple living together where one person is classed as dependent and cannot claim full social welfare allowance while the other person cannot claim tax relief for the two of them because they are not married; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Reform of the social welfare code is a matter for the Minister for Social Welfare. Likewise, reform of the taxation code is a matter for the Minister for Finance. I will bring the anomaly identified by the Deputy to the attention of the appropriate Ministers.
