Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Prisoner in Britain.

Tony Gregory

Question:

80 Mr. Gregory asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the case of a prisoner (details supplied); and if he will make representations to the British authorities on his behalf.

I am aware of the case in question. My Department has monitored the case, including the unsuccessful appeal, heard in 1991, against the prisoner's original conviction. On the basis of the information provided by the Deputy it appears that further court action is being considered. I emphasise that the Government has made very clear to the British authorities the importance we attach to ensuring that the system for the administration of justice operates in a fair and equitable manner.
