Vol. 430 No. 6

Written Answers. - Kilcoole (Wicklow) School.

Liz McManus

Question:

97 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, she has taken to meet the local transport officer in Wicklow to resolve the ongoing difficulty in relation to the school crisis in the Kilcoole area; and when an extra bus will be provided for the school-going children of the area.

I understand that the parents in question intend to send their children to post-primary schools in Wicklow town from September 1993. Under the terms of the school transport scheme, the appropriate schools for the children in question for school transport purposes are in the Bray/Greystones area. I am satisfied that there is sufficient accommodation in these schools to provide for the 18 pupils whose names the Deputy sent to my Department.

The closing date for receipt of applications for transport to post-primary schools for 1993-94 was 26 April 1993. When the application from those pupils who are proper to the Wicklow town schools have been processed by the transport liaison officer, he will consider what transport, if any, may be accorded to pupils from outside the area, including those mentioned by the Deputy.
My Department is keeping in close touch with the transport liaison officer in regard to this matter.
