Vol. 430 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Decentralisation Cost.

Ivor Callely

Question:

9 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if she will give a breakdown of the total cost involved to date for her Department under the current Government programme of decentralisation; if she will clarify the costs and relevant payments to personnel with regard to the relocation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department's finance division moved from Dublin to Killarney under the Government's decentralisation programme in August 1990.

The principal costs borne directly by my Department relate to the fitting out, furnishing and wiring of the new office building in Killarney which was built under contract for the Office of Public Works. Costs under this heading amounted to approximately £386,000, including VAT where appropriate.

On the advice of the Office of Public Works a security firm was engaged to provide on-site security during the fitting out period and for some weeks after occupation. The cost under this heading was £19,362 including VAT.

Ex-gratia payments amounting to a total of £22,455 were made to 13 officers previously serving in centres outside Dublin who volunteered to serve in Killarney and who were required to come to Dublin for initial training prior to taking up duty in Killarney. No relocation costs as such were made to staff transferring to Killarney.

The cost of transporting files and equipment from Dublin to Killarney came to just under £6,000 including VAT.
