Vol. 430 No. 7

Written Answers. - Treatment of Aliens and Refugees.

Pat Cox

Question:

37 Mr. Cox asked the Minister for Justice whether she has satisfied herself that Ireland is living up to its obligations under international law in relation to the treatment of aliens and refugees; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The requirements of international law in this regard are being met as are the requirements agreed with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. There is always room for improvement, however, in the way in which these arrangements operate and the Deputy will be aware that I informed the House on 5 May 1993 that I am reviewing the existing procedures in this area to ensure that they are achieving the desired objectives having regard to developments since they were agreed with the UN High Commission for Refugees in 1985.
