Question:83 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of early releases of prisoners in 1992 in order to accommodate new committals; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The need to accommodate new committals is only one of the factors taken into account in deciding on temporary releases. Other factors include the nature of the offence, the length of sentence, behaviour while in custody and the safety of the public. Statistics are not maintained in such a manner as to permit identification of those cases where the need to accommodate new committals was a factor.
