Vol. 430 No. 7

Written Answers. - Primary School Capital Programme.

Donal Carey

Question:

114 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Education if she will introduce a Supplementary Estimate to cater for outstanding national school projects, where severe hardship and distress has been indicated, having regard to the fact that six additional projects would ease the 1993 crisis list considerably; and if she accepts the evidence provided by the INTO and the boards of management of these schools as bona fide.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 117 of 11 March last where I pointed out that, in accordance with the Programme for Government, there will be increased capital expenditure over the five years 1993-97 which will be directed systematically at the most deserving cases in the primary school capital programme in order to eliminate as far as possible unacceptable standards of accommodation, which it is acknowledged, still obtain in a number of schools. The introduction of Supplementary Estimates is a matter which is constrained by Government budgetary policy and there are no plans to introduce a Supplementary Estimate for the primary school capital programme.
