Vol. 431 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Waste Management Policy.

Bernard Allen

Question:

29 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment the position in relation to the development of a national waste management policy.

, Wexford): Irish waste management policy has developed continuously in line with that of the European Communities, and rests on the strict enforcement of relevant EC and national legislation in accordance with local authority waste management plans. The Programme for a Partnership Government contains a specific commitment to the early introduction of a Waste Bill, which will provide a comprehensive framework for the evolution and implementation of future waste management policies.

A national perspective on waste policy was outlined in the informal Discussion Paper on Waste published by my Department in July 1992 and the views expressed by a wide range of interested organisations on the issues involved are being taken into account in the preparation of the legislation.
