Vol. 431 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Petrol Outlets.

Ivor Callely

Question:

70 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of petrol retail outlets in Dublin in 1992 and comparison figures for 1987 and 1982; and if he has satisfied himself with the competition that exists in this trade.

I am informed by the Director of Consumer Affairs that in January 1992 there were 274 petrol retail outlets in Dublin. The Director has indicated that comparison figures for 1987 and 1982 are not available.

When the Competition Act, 1991 was brought into force in October 1991 price control on petroleum products was lifted and the Restrictive Practices (Motor Spirits) Order, 1981 was revoked. I am satisfied that a good balance has been achieved in providing a regulatory environment in which firms are free to compete on many fronts, particularly on price, while allowing those aggrieved of anti-competitive activity the means to seek redress.
