Pat Upton

Question:

120 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his Department or any other body in this country is carrying out research into the potential of methanol or ethanol for use as fuels for internal combustion engines; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 119 and 120 together.

Research is being undertaken, primarily by Teagasc, on the possibilities of converting agricultural crops to transport fuels. The potential for alternative fuel use in transport is of interest to my Department and is the subject of a seminar which is being organised by EOLAS for 10 June next.

The potential for energy use of biomass generally is also being considered by a committee set up by the Minister of State at my Department.
