Vol. 431 No. 2

Written Answers. - Naval Service Strength.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

95 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the current strength of the Irish Navy; the breakdown between male and female members; if he has any plans for early recruitment or expansion of the role at home or overseas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 31 March 1993 there were 1,008 personnel, all male, serving in the Naval Service. The question of facilitating the employment of women in the service is, at present, under active consideration.

There are no plans at this stage to expand the role of the Naval Service.

The question of recruitment is being kept under review in the light of the operational commitments of the service.
