Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cattle Slaughterings.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

181 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the weights, by category, of totally and partially condemned reactor cow, heifer, bullock and bull carcases for 1992; the number and weight of immature carcases condemned; and the number of reactors condemned ante-mortem.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

182 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number, by category, of bullocks, cows, heifers, bulls and veal calves slaughtered at registered meat export plants in 1992.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

183 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number, by category, of carcases of reactor cattle totally condemned in 1992 for TB, abscesses, emaciation and other reasons; the number of cattle condemned due to the presence of illegal substances; and if there has been any set pattern of condemnation over the past five years.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

184 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if, regarding cattle condemned for human consumption under the Fresh Meat Act, 1930, he will give the numbers of cows, bullocks, heifers and bulls slaughtered during 1992; and if, in relation to the meat condemned, he will give the number of carcases and part carcases condemned, the weight of the meat condemned and the number of carcases condemned due to illegal substances.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

185 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of cattle slaughtered during 1992 for having failed the TB and Brucellosis tests; the quantity of meat condemned as unfit for human consumption from these reactor cattle slaughtered during 1992; the reasons for condemnation under the categories of TB, abscesses, emaciated carcases and other reasons.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

186 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number and type of carcases condemned in 1992 prior to weighing on the killing line; the number and type of carcases condemned in 1992 due to the presence of illegal substances; if any variations in the number of condemnations are detectable over the past five years; if, on the basis of the figures supplied, he can give any advice to cattle producers on the way in which they can minimise carcases and part carcases being condemned as unfit for human consumption.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

188 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number and weight, by category, of bullock, cow, heifer, bull and veal carcases totally and partially condemned for 1992 under the Agricultural Produce Act, 1930.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 181 to 186, inclusive, and 188 together.

Records show that there has been a relatively consistent level of condemnations over the past five years. Producers should always ensure that their production methods do not entail any activity which could give rise to condemnation of their animals as being unfit for human consumption.

(i) Brucellosis: Carcases are not condemned owing to this condition.

(j) Number and weight of immature carcases condemned: Not available.

(k) Number of reactors condemned ante-mortem: Animals are not condemned at ante-mortem examination on the basis of being reactors.

Notes
(1) Calves are generally slaughtered under disease eradication measures rather than for veal.
(2) Carcases inspected post-mortem and declared unfit for human consumption would be condemned prior to weighting on the killing line.
(3) Figures based on average carcase weights for each category as condemned carcases are not normally weighed.

Question:

187 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number and type of animals removed for slaughter in 1992, under the TB scheme, the Brucellosis scheme and the BSE scheme.

In 1992, 35,997 animals were slaughtered as TB reactors, 8,008 animals were slaughtered as brucellosis reactors and a total of 18 animals were slaughtered for BSE. Brucellosis reactors are all female animals whereas TB and BSE reactors would consist of animals of all categories.
