Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Bruton

Question:

209 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the arrangements, if any, she will have made for special education suitable to the needs of a person (details supplied) in County Meath in view of the fact that she has been assessed as dyslexic and that ordinary remedial teaching is not satisfactory for her.

I have had this case examined and the position is that the child in question is on a waiting list for admission to Catherine McCauley Special School, Baggot Street, Dublin. I understand that the school authorities will shortly be considering applications for enrolment in September next and that this case will be considered in that context.

I further understand that decisions on admissions for the coming year will be made by the end of June.

Tony Gregory

Question:

210 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if she will assist in placing a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3 in a suitable special school to start in September 1993.

My Department is aware of the case mentioned by the Deputy.

The position is that the Health Authorities have specific responsibility for assessment of children and their referral for educational placement. No referral has been made to date in this particular case.

However, my Department has been in contact with the assessment agency involved with a view to determining the appropriate educational placement for the child. When this is to hand, the question of enrolment in an appropriate school will be pursued.
