Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Agriculture and Food Research and Development.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

74 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to provide additional funding for research and development in agriculture and food, in view of the vital role that this sector will play in future job creation.

The Government is committed to supporting research and development in the agriculture and food industry to the fullest extent possible from the resources available, including from EC Structural Funds becoming available from 1994 onwards. Already in this year's budget the Government has provided a sum of £250,000 to support co-ordinated food research of a "public good" nature.

Teagasc is in receipt of funds from various sources including the grant-in-aid, EC payments, charges for some services, consultancy contracts and receipts from its own farming activities.

Expenditure by Teagasc for the current year will be approximately £63 million. It is a matter for the body itself to decide on the apportionment of its resources between the various activities.
