Vol. 431 No. 7

Written Answers - Waterways Visitor Centre, Ringsend, Dublin.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

44 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the total cost of the building of the Interpretative Centre on the inner Grand Canal Docks Basin, Dublin 2; when construction finished, when the centre will be opened; and the way in which the centre will be used to benefit the community in Ringsend, Dublin 4.

The total cost of the Waterways Visitor Centre in Ringsend is £1.25 million. Construction of the centre finished earlier in the year. Work is currently underway on the installation of the display material. It is hoped to have the centre open in about one months time.

The construction of the centre in Ringsend is a very positive contribution by the Office of Public Works towards the rejuvenation of the area. The centre will complement the existing IDA Enterprise Centre nearby. These two high quality developments will hopefully help to attract visitors and further investment to the area to the benefit of Ringsend and the city generally.

The centre is primarily intended to explain the origins and current amenity uses of our inland waterways navigation system.
