Vol. 431 No. 8

Written Answers. - Availability of Drug.

Noel Ahern

Question:

140 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health if, in relation to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11, he will make the drug Prolactin available on an ongoing basis; if he will have arrangements made for its administration in a hospital setting.

I have been advised by the Mater Hospital that the drug Prolactin is available on a named patient basis only because of its scarcity worldwide. The total cost of this drug treatment per annum for each patient is £50,000 approximately and I understand that a number of patients would be suitable for this treatment at present. I understand, however, that these patients are currently being appropriately treated for their condition and are under constant medical supervision.
