Vol. 432 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Uniforms.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

253 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the regulations governing the wearing of school uniforms in national schools; if she will give assurances that the wearing of uniforms in any national school is not mandatory; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There are no regulations governing the wearing of school uniforms in national schools; uniforms are not mandatory.

At local level the board of management of each national school, which is representative of parents, patron and staff, is the body charged with the direct government of the school. Accordingly, school policy in relation to this issue is a matter for each board of management.
I am aware that many educationalists attach considerable positive value to the wearing of school uniforms and also that uniforms can, provided appropriate arrangements are made, reduce expenses for parents. However, in the final analysis, school authorities cannot insist on the compulsory wearing of a school uniform.
