Vol. 432 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youth Service Grant Scheme.

Michael Creed

Question:

41 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties being experienced by youth organisations because of the inadequate and ad hoc system of funding operated by her Department.

The total allocation for the Youth Service Grant Scheme in 1993 is £11.452 million which represents an increase of 6 per cent on the 1992 allocation. Before deciding on how this money should be allocated to the various Youth Organisations and Disadvantaged Projects my Department examined submissions from the various bodies involved. I will immediately make a copy of the actual breakdown of the 1993 allocation available to the Deputy. I do not accept that the system is ad hoc as suggested by the Deputy. Each organisation makes as strong a case as possible for funding and the available funds are allocated equitably and fairly having the fullest regard to the terms of the Youth Service Grant Scheme and the Disadvantaged Youth Grant Scheme.
