Vol. 432 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Survey.

Helen Keogh

Question:

46 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, which have been taken to undertake a survey of the extent of disability in schools.

A survey aimed at identifying the extent of disability in ordinary national schools was undertaken by the Special Education Review Committee in 1992. The survey focused on a large representative sample of schools and sought details of children across a wide spectrum of special needs.

There was a 100 per cent response to the survey and its findings were evaluated by the Educational Research Centre on behalf of the Special Education Committee.

The outcome of the survey will inform the committee in recommending what future support services are required to meet the educational needs of the children in question.

I expect that the Review Committee's findings will be reported to me by summer.
